The Book Club: Fountains of Silence

In conversation with bestselling author, Ruta Sepetys.

Our inaugural book club meeting explored The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys, a gripping historical novel set in 1957 Madrid under General Francisco Franco's rule. Members engaged in a rich discussion about the novel’s themes of identity, love, and the dangers of silence.

One of the most thought-provoking questions we discussed was: How does silence function as both a weapon and a form of protection in the novel? Many members reflected on how characters like Ana and her family must carefully navigate a world where speaking out can lead to dire consequences, while others, like Daniel, begin to understand the weight of unspoken truths in a repressive society.

Another question that sparked discussion was: What role does photography play in uncovering hidden stories? We explored how Daniel’s passion for photography serves as both an artistic outlet and a way to expose suppressed realities, challenging the façade presented by Franco’s regime. His journey from an outsider to someone deeply connected to Spain’s struggles resonated with many of our members.

This powerful discussion reminded us of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of uncovering untold histories.
